Huge changes. Thrilling and stressful
job, microsoft September 14th, 2009It’s another one of those self-titled Where’s Lou posts today! So - where’s Lou now? New employee orientation in Washington! And Brenda’s still in Florida at the moment so the DeJardin household is about as geographically distributed as we’ve ever been. :)
The big news today is I’ve accepted a position at Microsoft, which is the final realization of an ambition of mine which started a year and a half ago. What hooked me then was watching the open style of development the ASP.NET MVC team was embracing and the great results and positive community feedback they were getting. I though to myself, if there was someplace you could choose to work that would be it.
I should add I’m not on the MVC team, but since I don’t know what’s public knowledge yet or not - please forgive me being vague.
Plus if anyone’s curious this doesn’t change the status of Spark regarding license, source, distribution, etc.
But yeah! Exciting! I have to finish up now and grab some coffee and prepare myself for a day of paperwork and hr presentations. Woohoo!

Congratulations on your new job!
Puzzled as to why you’re not joining the MVC team however…

He won’t be on the MVC team, but don’t you worry, he’ll be working closely with us. I’ll be bugging him all the time, and probably vice versa. :)

Congrats on the new gig Louis! I’m a big fan of Spark, so I’ll be keeping tabs on where it goes from here. Hopefully baked into ASP.NET MVC as the default view engine… hint, hint Haack ;-)

Congratz! Btw, Please update the typo “ASP.NET MCV team” -> “ASP.NET MVC team”.
September 14th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
Congratulations Lou! I hope we find out soon what things you are building at Microsoft!
Even though you are not on the MVC.net team it would be great to see Spark packaged in with a future release like JQuery. Will Spark be added to the CodePlex Foundation?
September 14th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Congrats, Lou! MS sure knows how to snatch up the good ones. :)
September 14th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

Great Move Microsoft! I already wonders how Spark could be brought in the MVC camp as an alternative for the WebForms engine because it is by far the better engine.
Haack hire Steven Sanderson and let him build the Baseline MVC Application because Oxite and Kobe where not so good and Steven knows how to write Baseline code. Let him Expand his SportStore application and put EF in it, because Linq to SQL is dumped (not officially) but it is, it is true TDD what is I think one of the main things of MVC.

Well, first of all I’m glad you like Spark, but the situation is kind of the opposite of what you might assume. All of the code, docs, sites, distribution, etc. are listed as pre-existing invention so they remain very much non-Microsoft property.
In fact if they simply wanted Spark it would have been easier and cheaper to buy a copyright assignment from the various contributors and me. Simpler too, because now that I have an employee contract it will add a new layer of complexity to the relationship between MS, myself, and Spark going forward.
Legal stuff is nuts. Omg, I almost just dozed off writing this.I shouldn’t be talking about opensource copyright law when I’m this tired. Hey, though seriously if you want a peek into how crazy it gets check out the codeplex foundation google group.

Hey Lou,
Congrats from a ex-Microsofty - ok, so it was 15 years ago now and we were releasing Daytona (NT 3.51) and Microsoft Bob was supposed to take off. I was working on COM/OLE and having fun. Good luck in Redmond.

“since I don’t know what’s public knowledge yet or not - please forgive me being vague”
Can you share what you’re working on yet?
October 17th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Nope! Crazy isn’t it? It’s pretty exciting stuff though. :)
